Vulkan Patron Michaela Breeze Drives through Agony to Finish Olympics
Olympic weightlifter and Vulkan patron Michaela Breeze gritted her way through excruciating pain to finish seventh in Beijing this morning.
The 63kg lifter, wearing Vulkan Pink Wrist and Vulkan SI Knee Supports was Great Britain’s only weightlifter. She won gold for Wales at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games but was suffering from a back injury when the Beijing Olympics came around.
Breeze succeeded in lifting 80kg and 85kg in the first two attempts but decided to miss out on the third attempt due to the pain she was feeling in her back. However, when the clean and jerk round began Breeze staged a dramatic recovery which was welcomed by roars and loud applause from the crowd.
She was in obvious agony as she lifted 80kg, 90kg and 100kg. Each successful attempt prompted a rousing response from the spectators in recognition of her grit and courage.
Breeze began crying as she held the barbell over her head in her final lift and later collapsed onto the floor in floods of tears.
As she left the arena Breeze waved to the crowd and thanked them for helping her through to the end, "adrenalin is the best pain-killer and the crowd could see I was struggling. They really got behind me, they were fantastic. It's just the drive that got me through I suppose."
Breeze will undoubtedly receive a great reception on her return to the UK due to her sheer guts and determination.
Well done Michaela!
